Subtraction Table in Math is the systematic arrangement of numbers that are written in the topmost row and topmost column. This arrangement of numbers helps us to find the difference between any two numbers by observation, not by traditional calculation.

A typical subtraction table consists of rows and columns, with each cell representing the difference between the numbers corresponding to the row and column headings. The top row and leftmost column usually display the numbers being subtracted (subtrahends), while the interior cells contain the resulting differences.

For example, consider a subtraction table for numbers from 1 to 10:

How to Read a Subtraction Table?

Here, we will discuss how to read subtraction table chart by an example.

Let consider subtraction between 8 and 5 i.e., 8 - 5 .

To read subtraction table for 8 - 5, we can use the following steps:

Step 1: Identify the row with number 5 as its header.

Step 2: Identify the column with number 8 as its header.

Subtraction Table : ( Subtraction Chart 1 - 12 )

Step 3: Intersection of both rows results in the required difference.

Thus, the result of the given expression is 3.

How to Create a Subtraction Table?

Let us create a subtraction table for 1 to 10.

Step 1 : On the top left corner, the minus sign ( - ) represents the operation.

Step 2 : The top most row contains the first numbers from 12 to 1 which represent the minuend. ( we can also write the numbers from 1 to 12 ).

Step 3 : The left most column or the first column contains the numbers from 1 to 12 which represent the second number or subtrahend.

Step 4 : Now, we can fill the empty cells based on the row and column. As we already identified the minuend and subtrahend, so it is easy to fill the cells.

Let's consider the steps for number 1.

Subtraction Facts of 1

1 – 1 = 0

2 - 1 = 1

3 - 1 = 2

4 - 1 = 3

5 - 1 = 4

6 - 1 = 5

7 - 1 = 6

8 - 1 = 7

9 - 1 = 8

10 - 1 = 9

11 - 1 = 10

12 - 1 = 11

Similarly, you can write subtraction table of any numbers by following the above subtraction table.
