Supplementary angles are a fundamental concept in the domain of geometry. They are pairs of angles that sum up 180 degrees. This simple mathematical principle has a lot of applications in real life. From the field of architecture to sports, and even in our nature.

In this article, we are going to see the real-life applications of supplementary angles.

Supplementary Angles Definition

Supplementary angles are pairs of angles that add to result in 180 degrees.

For example: If one angle measured is 140 degrees then its supplementary angle would become 40 degrees because 140 + 40 equals 180.

supplementary-angles

Another example could be two right angles (each measuring 90 degrees) which are also supplementary because their sum is also 180 degrees. This concept is used in geometry lots and has various real-world applications.

Real-Life Applications of Supplementary Angles

Supplementary angles have various applications in real life, including:

  • Supplementary Angles in Architecture
  • Supplementary Angles in Engineering
  • Supplementary Angles in Navigation
  • Supplementary Angles in Surveying
  • Supplementary Angles in Sports
  • Supplementary Angles in Art and Design
  • Supplementary Angles in Everyday Life

Let's learn the same in detail below:

Supplementary Angles in Architecture

  • It is used in Calculating roof angles: Angles between the roof and walls must be supplementary this will ensure the proper drainage of water.
  • It is used in designing bridges: Angles between the bridge deck and supports must be supplementary to provide stability to the complete structure.

Supplementary Angles in Engineering

  • Use in measuring angles in machinery: Angles between gears and shafts and other components should be supplementary, this will ensure the smooth in operation.
  • Use in designing trusses: Angles between the members of a truss should be supplementary. This will distribute the weight evenly.

Supplementary Angles in Navigation

  • Used in determining compass bearings: Angle between two compass bearings must be form supplementary if they represent in the opposite directions.
  • Used in calculating angles of elevation: Angle between the horizontal and line of sight of an object should be supplementary to angle of depression.

Supplementary Angles in Surveying

  • Used in measuring land boundaries: Angles between the adjacent property lines should be supplementary this will ensure the accurate measurements.
  • Use in calculating angles of elevation: Angle between the horizontal and line of sight of landmark should be supplementary to the angle of depression.

Supplementary Angles in Sports

  • Use in calculating angles in golf: Angle between club and ground at impact should be supplementary to the angle of the ball's trajectory.
  • Used in measuring angles in tennis: Angle between the racket and the court while hitting a forehand or backhand shold be supplementary to angle of ball's flight.

Supplementary Angles in Art and Design

  • Used in creating perspective drawings: Angles between vanishing points in a perspective drawing should be supplementary to create illusion of the depth.
  • Use in designing logos and graphics: Angles between different elements in a logo or graphic can be used to create some visual interest and balance.

Supplementary Angles in Everyday Life

  • Used in measuring angles in carpentry: Angles between the sides of a picture's frame or a table's leg must be supplementary this will ensure a square or rectangular shape.
  • Used in calculating angles in cooking: Angles between blades of a knife while cutting vegetables or meat can affect the size and shape of the pieces.
