Think About It

Que 1. Why do the courtiers call the prince ‘the Happy Prince'? Is he really happy? What does he see all around him?

Answer-

When he was alive, he was a prince living in the luxuries of his palace. But as a prince, he was unaware of sorrow & suffering. That is why, the courtiers called him ‘the happy prince’.

But in reality, he was not happy as his heart could feel the misery of the needy people. All around him, he saw the miserable conditions of people.

Que 2. Why does the Happy Prince send a ruby for the seamstress? What does the swallow do in the seamstress’ house?

Answer-

The Happy Prince sends a ruby for the poor seamstress whose son was ill with a fever. Her son asked her to give him oranges but all she could give him was river water.

The Happy Prince requested the swallow to visit the seamstress & give her the ruby. She was asleep & her son was tossing with fever. When the swallow reached her house. The swallow kept the ruby on the table beside her thimble. He then gently went around the boy’s bed, fanning the boy’s forehead with his wings. This made the boy feel better & he went into a deep sleep.

Que 3. For whom does the prince send the sapphires & why?

Answer-

The playwright was very poor, incapable of buying food & firewood. That is why the prince sent the sapphires for him so that he could finish his play for the theatre director on time. The prince sent his second sapphire to a poor match girl whose matches had fallen into the gutter. She feared that her father would beat her for this loss. So, the prince sent her the second sapphire & helped her.

Que 4. What does the swallow see when it flies over the city?

Answer-

When the swallow flies over the city, it saw the contrast between the lives of the rich & the poor. He saw the rich making merry in their beautiful houses, while the beggars sat at the gates. He flies into dark lanes & saw the starving children white faces looking out listlessly at the black streets.

Que 5. Why did the swallow not leave the prince & go to Egypt?

Answer-

At first, the swallow was willing to go to Egypt after discharging his duty properly. But when he saw the Prince’s charity & kindness, he was impressed. Due to the deeds of charity, the Prince had now become completely blind. The swallow could not leave the Prince in such a helpless situation. He gave up his idea of going to Egypt & decided to serve the Prince instead.

Que 6. What are the precious things mentioned in the story? Why are they precious?

Answer-

The precious things which are mentioned in the story include- the leaden heart of the Happy Prince and the dead bird.

Because both the happy prince and the dead bird are generous and kind, they are precious. Happy Prince came to sacrifice the precious ruby of his sword so the poor seamstress is able to get the ever of son treated and he also went to sacrifice his sapphire eyes and also became blind. He also kept giving about the gold leaves attached to his statue for the needy and poor people.

Bird came to sacrifice his wish for going to Egypt with his friends and stayed back with Happy Prince and ultimately came to sacrifice his life to stay with the prince and also to help people.

Thus, when god asked to bring to previous things, the angel brought the leaden heart of the Happy Prince and the dead bird.

Talk About It

Que 1. The little swallow says, “It is curious, but I feel quite warm now, although it is so cold.” Have you ever had such a feeling? Share your experience with your friends.

Answer-

Man is a social animal. He can not exist by himself & needs to interact with others. He is dependent on others so that he can lead a satisfactory life. Therefore, mutual help is required. Whenever we help others, we feel satisfied & content. Whenever others help us, we feel grateful. It is because being of help to others is the essence of life.

In this chapter, we see how the little swallow feels warmth when he helps needy people. He does his act selflessly with utmost dedication & sacrifice. This keeps him satisfied. Yes, I have experienced such a feeling. I believe in helping others. Others help me as well, whenever I am in need. Helping others makes me feel content & I feel blessed that God gives me such opportunities where I could be of help to others. Being of help to someone is one of the most noble deeds.
