Facts About Biogas: Biogas is a mixture of methane (50-78%) and carbon dioxide that can also contain some hydrogen sulfide, siloxanes, and moisture. Biogas production involves the anaerobic digestion of organic matter, such as agricultural waste or sewage to generate a renewable energy source. In this article, we are going to discuss the different interesting facts about biogas in detail.

Biogas

According to the World Biogas Association, Biogas has a glorious history. Back in 900 BC, biogas was used for heat baths in Assyria and the Persian people used it for heating purposes. Jan Baptista Van Helmont was a Flemish chemist who first discovered that it is possible to make flammable gas from organic matter.

Biogas is a clean renewable energy source that can reduce the water and soil population. It has the potential to replace LPG as a more sustainable option. Biogas is produced in biogas plants and can produce heat and electricity to be used in different types of engines, turbines, and fuel cells. Biomethane is an upgraded version of biogas that is denoted as RNG (Renewable Natural Gas).

Facts About Biogas

Here are some intresting facts about the Biogas mentioned below.

Fact 1 - Clean Energy Source

Biogas is a source of clean energy that is produced by the microorganisms. It is renewable where methane is the major component. In biogas, 50-78% methane is present which makes it a flammable component.

Fact 2 - Hydrocarbon Fuel

Biogas is not a fossil fuel. It is a hydrocarbon fuel, in which methane is the major component. Biogas can not be found in the mining processes. It is a natural gas that is produced when bacteria break down generic matters.

Fact 3 - Cheap And Safe

Biogas is a cheap, safe, and renewable energy source that can be used in cooking, heat production, and street lighting. In Denmark, most of the people use Biogas for heating and power plants.

Fact 4 - Recycle Daily Waste Into Energy

Biogas is the best way to recycle the daily waste into the energy. It helps to prevent pollution which can be caused by sewage treatment. In this process, the useful bacterias breaks the toxic elements into organic matters which reduce the toxic chemical effects due to the sewage treatment process.

Fact 5 - Production Process

Biogas can be produced in a wet environment. The organic matter and the daily wastes dissolve in the water. The useful bacteria break them up and produce gas and sludge. This sludge can be used as fertilizer due to having rich nutrients into it.

Fact 6 - Methanogens

Methanogens are those bacteria that generally produce the biogas from the sludge. They grow under certain anaerobic conditions and produce high amounts of methane with carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

Fact 7 - Digestate

After the production of the Biogas, there are some waste found from the biogas plant. It is known as the digestate. This material can be used as fertilizers and fish feed.

Fact 8 - Impact On The Environment

The production system of Biogas helps to reduce methane emissions during the storage process of animal waste. This process is known as decomposition. The Biogas is much more effective in saving the environment as it reduces the emission of CO2 and methane in the open environment.

Fact 9 - Renewable Natural Gas

Biogas is also known as the Renewable Natural Gas. When the CO2 and water vapor are removed from the raw biogas, it can be injected into the natural gas grids for further use. That means it has the potential to replace the use of natural gases.

Fact 10 - Biogas with Petrol and Diesel as Mixture

Biogas is generally a combustible gas that can ignite itself in the presence of oxygen. Methane has a self-ignition temperature of 600°C which is much higher than petrol and diesel. The mixture of Biogas and petrol can be used as an ideal fuel in petrol engines.

Conclusion - Interesting Facts About Biogas

Biogas is a clean energy source that has the potential to reduce the water and soil population. It has the potential to replace LPG as Biogas is more sustainable than LPG and not compressed. It can be used as the vehicle fuel. Though, there are so many advantages there are some disadvantages also. Impure biogas can create different diseases like pulmonary paralysis, asthma, and different respiratory diseases. Biogas is the best way to recycle the daily waste into the energy. It helps to prevent pollution which can be caused by sewage treatment.
