Dividing fractions worksheets focus on teaching the "invert and multiply" method, where students flip the second fraction and multiply the numerators and denominators. These worksheets typically include problems like dividing fractions by whole numbers, mixed numbers, or other fractions. Designed for students in grades 5 through 7, they offer various exercises with answer keys for self-assessment.

In this article, we will solve problems related to dividing fractions also we provide a worksheet for your practice.

What is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It is expressed as a/b, where a is the numerator (the number of parts taken) and b is the denominator (the total number of equal parts).

Fractions are used to express quantities that are smaller than one or to divide numbers. For example, 1/2 means one part of a whole that has been divided into two equal parts. Fractions can also be classified into different types, such as:

  • Proper Fractions (where the numerator is smaller than the denominator),
  • Improper Fractions (where the numerator is larger), and
  • Mixed Numbers (a whole number combined with a fraction)

How to Divide Fractions?

Dividing fractions involves a simple process called "invert and multiply." Here's how you can divide fractions step-by-step:

  1. Flip the second fraction (the divisor).
  2. Multiply the first fraction by the flipped fraction.
  3. Multiply the numerators together.
  4. Multiply the denominators together.
  5. Simplify the result, if possible.

Solved Problems on Dividing Fractions

Problem 1: Solve 3/4 ÷ 2/5.

Solution:

Given: 3/4 ÷ 2/5

3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = (3 × 5)/(4 × 2) = 15/8

Problem 2: Solve 7/9 ÷ 4/6.

Solution:

Given: 7/9 ÷ 4/6.

7/9 ÷ 4/6. = 7/9 × 6/4 = 7 × 6/4 × 2 = 42/8 = 21/4.

Problem 3: Solve 5/8 ÷ 10/3.

Solution:

Given: 5/8 ÷ 10/3.

5/8 ÷ 10/3 = (5/8) × (3/10) = 15/80.

Problem 4: Solve 1/3 ÷ 7/3.

Solution:

Given: 1/3 ÷ 7/3.

1/3 ÷ 7/3 = (1/3) × (3/7) = 3/21 = 1/7.

Problem 5: Solve 2 ÷ 1/2.

Solution:

Given: 2 ÷ 1/2

2 ÷ 1/2 = (2/1) × (1/2) = 1

Problem 6: Solve 8/9 ÷ 12/5.

Solution:

Given: 8/9 ÷ 12/5.

8/9 ÷ 12/5 = (8/9) × (5/12) = 40/108.

Problem 7: Solve 6/14 ÷ 3/7.

Solution:

Given: 6/14 ÷ 3/7.

6/14 ÷ 3/7 = (6/14) × (7/3) = 42/42 = 1.

Problem 8: Solve 10/11 ÷ 2/5.

Solution:

Given: 10/11 ÷ 2/5.

10/11 ÷ 2/5 = (10/11) × (5/2) = 50/22.

Problem 9: Solve 9/10 ÷ 3/4.

Solution:

Given: 9/10 ÷ 3/4.

9/10 ÷ 3/4 = (9/10) × (4/3) = 36/30 = 12/10.

Problem 10: Solve 3 ÷ 7/2.

Solution:

Given: 3 ÷ 7/2

3 ÷ 7/2 = 3 × (2/7) = 6/7.
