Microwaves are a type of electromagnetic radiation. They have wavelengths ranging from about one meter to one millimeter.Their frequencies range between 300 MHz (0.3 GHz) and 300 GHz. They play an important role in modern daily life. In this article, we are going to learn the uses of micro-waves in daily life.

What are Micro-waves?

Microwaves are a type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from one meter to one millimeter. They have frequencies between 300 MHz (0.3 GHz) and 300 GHz.

  • Microwaves were first discovered by James Clerk Maxwell in the 19th century. They were later experimentally verified by Heinrich Hertz in the late 1880s.
  • Microwaves have lower energy compared to visible light and X-rays.
  • They can travel through the atmosphere, making them useful for various types of wireless communications.

What are Applications of Microwave?

The applications of microwaves are mentioned below:

Food Preparation

Microwaves can be used to quickly reheat food or do it from the beginning thanks to a short period that is required as compared to baking or cooking foods in an oven. Microwave ovens' more accurate cooking time and power level add extra value in hectic daily schedules and busy environment.

Example: In this process, we put food inside a microwave oven exposes it to a set of electromagnetic waves at the frequency of microwaves (2.45 GHz). These waves at these frequencies make water molecules present in food to vibrate. The internal heating of food is caused by this vibrating molecule. This uniform, intense heating leads in a considerable decrease of the cooking time as compared to the regular cooking devices (e.g. cooking stove, ovens).

Communication Systems

The microwave medium is the vehicle that allows data transmission (data transmission) over large distances in the modern communication systems. Microwaves transportation transmission towers and satellites allow for broadcasting TV, radio, cell and internet networks. The capability for big data carriers in higher speeds is proven to be a vital thing for the world to improve globally the communication process.

Example: Microwave networks are commonly used to connect a base station, in an isolated as well as remote area, with the main network of a cellular network where a long fiber optic is not a convenient option. Microwave, as a diagnostic imaging tool, is utilized across the medical field. The most common ones being magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan. The ability to pinpoint only those tissues that carry the disease while minimizing the adverse impact on the neighboring healthy tissues, offered by the microwave-based therapies, suggests that patients have a significantly less invasive but more effective alternative to existing treatment methods.

Radar Systems

Radars have been designed to work with microwaves as a result and having these waves helps in object detection and tracking in various Nearby regions. Weather forecasting, air traffic control, and military surveying are the illustration of how radar technology is applied to monitoring and pivotal role to aviation and shipping safety as well to even protecting the security in defense operations.

Air traffic control radars use microwave, which tracks the position and move for airplanes to avoid any accident and better air travel. Material Processing and Manufacturing

Currently industrial processes are being more processed with microwave technology for ripening, curing, and drying of many diverse materials. The area of appliances manufacturing from which ceramics and plastics to composites and polymers is apprehended by the use of microwave technology, and the reduction of processing times as compared to the traditional heating methods is the proof of high energy efficiency and lower costs and the implication of improved productivity during manufacturing processes.

Remote Sensing and Earth Observation
