WordPress.. earn a buck releasing free software

So, Matt accepted articles for publication on the WordPress website that are not WP related. They are (were? The Google searches linked to don’t return anything) there for generating revenue and nothing more.
There are plenty of ways to make money doing free software, but they usually mean doing work for someone else and sometimes that code doesn’t get released. Or you rely on the goodwill of others to donate and that doesn’t happen often!

Matt’s done a huge amount of work for WordPress and I wish him well finding another source of revenue to cover his hosting costs, compensation for his time and other costs.

  1. Well, to be fair, he did more than just “accept a few articles for publication”, didn’t he. In fact, he put up hidden links to them on the WP.org frontpage, which got him banned from Google (check out his current pagerank). Not very smart, I believe…

  2. Ironically, Matt is still google #1 for “matt”. As for this brewhaha, I’ve got 30+ wp sites, so I’ve got enormous respect for Matt and all the other developers, and I want wp to thrive and just keep getting better. So I kinda wish he hadn’t gamed google and had been more transparent about his actions. That said, lighten up until we hear from the man himself……
